Reading :
Reading takes the child from unknown to known. Words are made up of letters, and letters are symbols for the sounds that we use. The child who is learning to read is figuring out that he can decode the written word. If he sounds out the word and blends the word, he can know that he is reading, and that the word has meaning. Through these meaningful words, the child can then learn to express his thoughts, emotions, and ideas.
In our Montessori environment we assess the child\'s ability to recognize letter sounds. The letters they do not know are introduced using the "three period lesson". Once a child masters his/her letter sounds we begin to teach blending and word creation using the moveable alphabet. Children who are having difficulty with reading skills are given an extra edge by breaking down words to their simpliest terms utilizing Montessori materials. Once reading has been mastered we continue to guide the child in proficency and speed. All children benefit from this approach. Our reading tutor has her masters degree in Montessori elementary education and has been teacher for many years.
